      Home contents insurance is
one of the most important types
of insurance policies that you will
ever buy.  It covers the contents
of your home from loss, damage
or theft.  Whether you own your
home or live in a rental property
doesn’t matter, the home
contents insurance policy will
protect your personal belongings
and items inside your home while
they are there. 

      The personal property
insurance policy and home
contents insurance policy
are different names for the
same type of insurance. 
For people who rent the home they live in, it can also be called a renters policy.   

      Many of us underestimate the value of what we have in our homes.  Until those items are not there anymore because of a fire or other disaster.  By then it’s too late. 

      Have you ever done an inventory of your personal belongings?  If you have, then you’ve taken an important step toward protecting your property.  But when was the last time you updated that inventory?

      If you haven’t done a household inventory, then don’t wait another day to start one.  If you have a video camera, that’s the best thing to use to do an inventory of your home because you can narrate as you walk through your home and describe items without needing to write each of them down.  After you’ve completed a video of your household items, look for the original receipts when you bought more expensive items like an air conditioner, computer or TV and put them together with your video.  It’s best to store these items away from your house, perhaps at a family member’s house or you can even take it to work with you and stick it in a filing cabinet.  Be sure to let someone else know where you have put it.
